Edmonton has named Cadence Weapon its Poet Laureate, replacing the 74-year old University of Alberta professor of comparative literature who previously held the post. Now, Poet Laureate, I know I’m thinking Gwendolyn Brooks when I hear that title. But Cadence Weapon admits: “most of my content is about Edmonton… It’s basically another outlet for the writing I’m already doing, and I can focus it even more now.” And you know, “Roland Pemberton” is a pretty poet laureate sounding name, so he’s got that going for him. His next album, Roquentin, is named after a character in an existentialist novel. So, yeah. Poet laureate. Definitely. Minus ten points for thanking Jack Kerouac in the liner notes to Separation Anxiety.
