Sorry KRS, but according to some guy in New Mexico, rap actually was not invented in the South South Bronx.
Ferenc Szasz is a professor of history at the University of New Mexico. In a recent study he claims that the tradition of battle rap has its roots in an ancient Caledonian practice known as flyting, in which participants would exchange obscene jabs in rhyme form. The Scottish brought the art to America where, wouldn’t you know it, those conniving slaves started jockin’ their style.
Discuss.
